3 concepts, 1 location
bistro, cigar lounge, and wine grotto
30+ years
of hospitality expertise
Background
Jim Reid's background couldn't be further from the restaurant industry. As a cloud architect and manager of cloud architects at Microsoft, he helped build out the OpenAI platforms that power ChatGPT. He also holds a business degree in global energy and has launched several businesses over the years. When Jim and three partners decided to open Ember & Vine—an upscale bistro, cigar lounge, and wine grotto in The Woodlands, just north of Houston—they brought together the perfect mix of expertise. Their general manager contributes over 30 years of hospitality experience, while Jim brings data-driven rigor and technical savvy. What sets Ember & Vine apart is what they call "hospitality reimagined"—the rare combination of all three revenue streams under one roof, which is seldom seen in their area.
“I've got a master's in business, and I still need a crutch sometimes. Using LivePlan was very simplistic.”

Problem
What began as a minor investment opportunity quickly evolved when Jim realized his group needed more investors. He decided to take a larger role running the business side, which meant exploring conventional loans, SBA-backed financing, or additional equity investors—all requiring a solid, professional business plan. As a self-described "data guy," Jim couldn't rely solely on his general manager's 30 years of industry experience. He needed a plan backed by validated market research, realistic demographics, and financials that could withstand scrutiny. The challenge was creating something comprehensive and data-driven while managing a build-out process taking longer than expected.

Solution
When Jim discovered LivePlan, one feature immediately caught his attention: the AI integration. Given his background helping build OpenAI platforms at Microsoft, he knew he would use AI regardless—but having it built directly into LivePlan was perfect. What impressed him was how LivePlan's AI handled context and memory across sections, pulling in demographics and inputs from one section to inform other sections of the plan. The AI helped with everything from SWOT analysis to pinpointing realistic demographics for the northern Houston area.
Beyond LivePlan, Jim found the LivePlan Expert customer advocacy team invaluable. When he reached out for help with financial tables and business plan structure, "They were wonderful. They jumped right in," going beyond software tutorials to provide business guidance. Even with a master's in business and decades of entrepreneurial experience, Jim appreciated the support: "I've got a master's in business, and I still need a crutch. Using LivePlan was very simplistic."
Outcome
When Jim presented his business plan to their lender for an SBA-backed loan, the response was immediate: "When they looked at the plan, they were … really impressed. So I think it secured us a business loan." While the official approval is still in the works, the team is confident that they’ll secure the couple million in funding they need to purchase their location outright—a major milestone for long-term success.
Ember & Vine is now in final construction stages and preparing to open soon. The planning process gave Jim such confidence that he's already scouting the next location. "I've learned so much this time around that being able to plug another business in and again, now that I'm more familiar with LivePlan, using that to kick off this next one, I think is gonna be—that's what's exciting here," he says. His wife thinks he's crazy for already planning a second restaurant, but Jim jokes he now has "a PhD" in bringing up restaurant businesses. He's eager to leverage LivePlan's forecasting capabilities once operational, turning their validated plan into an ongoing business management tool as they scale.
